The Subaru Crosstrek vs the Competition

Compare the Subaru Crosstrek Against Subcompact Crossovers like the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30, and Hyundai Kona

The Subaru Crosstrek stands apart from many subcompact crossovers by offering real versatility instead of just a higher seating position. It combines comfortable interior accommodations, flexible cargo space, and a well-rounded feature set. Plus, thanks to standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Subaru X-MODE®, and generous ground clearance, the Subaru Crosstrek is better-equipped for adventure than most segment rivals. Drivers in the Pocatello area who want a capable small crossover that balances everyday drivability with confidence-inspiring traction will appreciate what the Subaru Crosstrek has to offer. Here's a quick look at how it compares to a few prominent class competitors.

Subaru Crosstrek vs. Honda HR‑V

  • All-Weather Capability:  Every Subaru Crosstrek comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and at least 8.7 inches of ground clearance. You don't have to climb the trim ladder or select an optional add-on to get confident traction on snow-covered roads or uneven surfaces. The HR-V sits lower to the ground and is built around a front-wheel-drive layout. A basic all-wheel-drive system is available for the HR-V but isn't standard for any trim.

  • Performance: For the 2026 model year, all gas-powered Subaru Crosstrek models are equipped with a 2.5-liter BOXER® engine producing 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. Subaru also offers a new hybrid variant rated at 194 horsepower. The HR-V relies on a smaller 2.0-liter engine (158 horsepower, 138 pound-feet of torque) and does not offer a hybrid version at this time.

  • Off-Pavement Hardware: Thanks to its standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, X-MODE® traction management, and a higher ride height, the Crosstrek can venture beyond paved roads with confidence in any configuration. The available Wilderness trim elevates that capability with a dual-function X-MODE® system, increased ground clearance, skid plates, all-terrain tires, and more. The HR-V's available AWD system is primarily designed for slippery pavement rather than trail use.

  • Technology: The Crosstrek offers an available 11.6-inch touchscreen that feels more modern and intuitive than the HR-V's smaller display. Subaru also comes standard with an advanced Adaptive Cruise Control system that includes Lane Centering, plus steering-responsive headlights, features not offered on the HR-V. Subaru Crosstrek vs. Mazda CX‑30

  • Interior Space: Although both vehicles compete in the same segment, the Crosstrek makes better use of its interior dimensions. It offers more headroom and shoulder room, better outward visibility, and wide rear door openings for easier passenger access.

  • Cargo Versatility: Behind the rear seats, both models offer similar cargo capacity. However, the Subaru Crosstrek expands to 54.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded-well beyond the CX-30's maximum capacity of 45.2 cubic feet.
  • Infotainment Layout: Most Crosstrek trims feature an 11.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, keeping controls simple and accessible. The CX-30 has a smaller infotainment display and relies on an awkward rotary controller rather than a familiar touchscreen.

  • Driver Assistance:  Both models offer a solid roster of driver-assist features, but Subaru makes a few technologies easier to access, including a  standard lane-centering cruise control system and steering-responsive headlights. Similar features are limited to higher CX-30 trims.

Subaru Crosstrek vs. Hyundai Kona

  • Ride Comfort: The Crosstrek pairs supportive seating with suspension tuning that absorbs rough pavement effectively, which results in a more balanced and comfortable ride over longer distances.

  • Efficiency: Despite standard all-wheel drive, the Crosstrek delivers competitive fuel economy, earning an EPA-estimated 29 mpg combined. Additionally, independent Car and Driver testing saw the Crosstrek exceed its EPA rating. The Kona trails with a lower combined rating, even before factoring in real-world results.

  • Performance: The Crosstrek's 182-horsepower gas engine outpaces the Kona's standard 147-horsepower engine. The available 194-horsepower Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid widens the gap further, as the Kona does not offer a comparable hybrid alternative.

  • Capability:  Standard all-wheel drive, higher ground clearance, and X-MODE® give the Crosstrek an advantage when conditions deteriorate, making it the more confident choice for wintry Chubbuck or Rockland commutes.
